A comprehensive health-testing program for Border Collie should go beyond DNA tests and medical screenings. It combines health testing, pedigree analysis, structural assessment, and temperament evaluation to help produce healthy, capable dogs that reflect the breed's purpose and standard.

Key components include:

  • Health testing: Screening for inherited conditions such as hip dysplasia, eye diseases, and breed-specific genetic disorders helps reduce the risk of passing these conditions to future generations.
  • Pedigree analysis: Studying a dog's ancestry provides insight into the health, longevity, working ability, temperament, and genetic diversity present in a breeding program. A pedigree can reveal patterns that may not be evident from testing a single dog alone.
  • Structural assessment: Evaluation of a dog's conformation helps determine whether its physical structure is sound and functional. Correct structure contributes to efficient movement, athletic ability, and long-term physical health.
  • Temperament assessment: Border Collies should demonstrate stable, confident, and trainable temperaments. Assessing temperament helps ensure dogs are suitable companions, working dogs, and representatives of the breed.
  • Conformation shows: Participation in conformation shows allows dogs to be independently evaluated by experienced judges against the breed standard. While not a substitute for health testing, these assessments provide valuable feedback on structure, movement, breed type, and overall soundness.

Together, health testing, pedigree research, structural evaluation, and temperament assessment provide a more complete picture of a Border Collie's quality and suitability for breeding. Using all of these tools helps preserve the breed's health, working ability, sound structure, and stable temperament for future generations.
